The Rab Mythic Ultra insulated down jacket is a high-performance piece of outerwear designed for use in cold alpine conditions. I recently had the opportunity to test out this jacket in the Canadian Rockies, where temperatures dipped down to -20°C, as well as in mixed cold and damp conditions in North Wales , Norway and Scotland. Overall, I was very impressed with the Mythic Ultra's ability to keep me warm and happy in these challenging environments.

One of the standout features of the Mythic Ultra is its lightweight construction. The jacket is made with a combination of Pertex Quantum fabrics, which provide excellent weight and wind-resistance. The jacket is also treated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish to help keep moisture at bay. In addition to these technical fabrics, the jacket is insulated with high-quality 900 fill power European goose down, which provides exceptional warmth and compressibility.

One of the things I appreciated most about the Mythic Ultra was its versatility. Whether I was belaying on a cold and windy mountain face or walking through wet and muddy trails, the jacket performed exceptionally well. The adjustable hood was fairly effectove at sealing out the elements but I found it a bit fiddly to adjust with gloves on. The internal elastic cuffs and chin guard provided additional protection against the cold. The jacket also has a number of well-placed pockets, including two large hand pockets, a chest pocket, I would have liked an internal glove pocket but that's just a personal preference.

In terms of fit, the Mythic Ultra is designed to be worn over multiple layers and has a slightly relaxed fit. I found the size large to be true to size and comfortable to wear, even over a thick fleece or insulated jacket. The jacket also has a longer length, which provides additional coverage and helps to keep the cold out.

One of the things that really sets the Mythic Ultra apart from other insulated jackets is its packability. The jacket can be easily packed down into its own internal pocket, which makes it an excellent choice for backpacking or traveling. The jacket also comes with a stuff sack for easy storage and transport.

Whilst it is a fantastic jacket there are a few points I don't like. One is the windproofness, which was in general was excellent, but was let down by the zip baffle letting in cold air. The hood is also not as adjustable as it could be, again leaving body parts exposed to the elements. This was especially noticeable in the extreme cold conditions in Canada. Finally the lightweight fabric seems to very easily punctured from the inside by the down feather quills, perhaps a weight saving too far?

Overall, I was extremely impressed with the Rab Mythic Ultra insulated down jacket. It provided exceptional warmth and protection in a range of challenging conditions and is a versatile piece of outerwear that can be worn in a variety of different environments. The jacket is well-constructed, comfortable to wear, incredibly lightweight and packed with features that make it a great choice for anyone looking for a high-performance insulated jacket.
